Innovative Samsung Chips Could Be Beneficial for Cryptocurrency Mining Activities

Samsung started to produce a new 7nm chip known as Low Power Plus (7LPP) process node. According to the company, the new chip is able to reduce energy consumption by up to 50 per cent. The information has been released in an official press release on October the 18.

The chip will be produced by Samsung Foundry, and it will allow a 40% increase in area efficiency, with a 20% higher performance of 50% power reduction. The new process is based on extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography technology. That means that the chips are denser and energy efficient.

During the last months, cryptocurrency miners in the industry have experienced a reduction in profitability. With the current cryptocurrency prices, electricity bills cannot be paid. In some cases, miners operate losing money. With Samsung’s latest innovation, energy costs could be reduced substantially, increasing profitability and making mining activities healthier.

Chips become more efficient, smaller and more powerful. Back in April, the South Korean company created a 10nm hardware for Halong Mining’s DragonMint T1. The latest development of the EUV-based 7LPP process node is very positive for the company and the whole industry. The next step could be a 3nkm technology node semiconductor manufacturing.

However, this chip will not only improve cryptocurrency mining activities, but it would also help other industries such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), 5G, networking and more.

At the moment, Samsung did not inform which companies showed interest in the new 7LPP chips. Samsung hinted that the first chips could be used for mobile and high-performance computing (HPC) applications.

Charlie Bae, executive president of foundry sales and marketing team t Samsung Electronics said that the introduction of the EUV process node led a quiet revolution in the semiconductor industry.
At the same time, he said:
“This fundamental shift in how wafers are manufactured gives our customers the opportunity to significantly improve their products’ time to market with superior throughput, reduced layers, and better yields. We’re confident that 7LPP will be an optimal choice not only for mobile and HPC but also for a wide range of cutting-edge applications.”
By 2020, the company is expecting to secure additional capacity using a new EUV line for customers that need high-volume manufacturing for next-generation chip designs. Samsung explains that the 7LPP process is able to reduce the number of masks by 20%, allowing customers to save time and costs.
